Apple擴大eSIM機種!香港版 vs 中國版 iPhone 17 系列 SIM / eSIM 配置差異丨全球eSIM支援名單

Apple expands eSIM lineup! Differences in SIM/eSIM configurations between Hong Kong and China versions of the iPhone 17 series | Global eSIM support list

Apple officially released the iPhone 17 series, with significant changes to the SIM card slot configuration. The most attention-grabbing aspect for Hong Kong users is that the Hong Kong versions of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will no longer support a dual physical SIM card design, instead adopting a hybrid solution of "one Nano SIM + one eSIM" or "dual eSIMs." The iPhone Air will only have dual eSIMs.

In fact, Apple has been gradually pushing for eSIM adoption of iPhones globally, and Hong Kong's decision to abandon dual physical SIM cards signifies a significant step towards full eSIM adoption. Below is a comparison of the SIM card/eSIM configurations between the Hong Kong and mainland China versions of the iPhone 17 series.

iPhone 17 Series SIM/eSIM Configuration Comparison

The new generation of iPhones can store up to 8 eSIMs, and can activate 2 of them at the same time.

iPhone 17 1 Nano SIM + 1 eSIM
/ Dual eSIM

iPhone 17 Pro 1 Nano SIM + 1 eSIM

Dual eSIM
(Only supported by the Chinese version of A3518, China Unicom eSIM)

The Chinese iPhone 17 will still retain dual physical SIM cards, but the iPhone Air will switch to dual eSIM cards.

According to official information, the Chinese versions of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max still support dual Nano SIM cards; however, the iPhone Air has been changed to a dual eSIM configuration for the first time, becoming the first iPhone model to support eSIM in China.

This change shows that Apple is also gradually promoting eSIM in the Chinese market, but is still taking a relatively conservative approach, starting with the iPhone Air to test the waters.

iPhone Air may only be able to roam in mainland China; non-Chinese versions will not be able to use Chinese eSIM.

Since the entire iPhone Air series only supports eSIM , Hong Kong residents who frequently travel to and from China may face usage restrictions when purchasing the Hong Kong version or other overseas versions of the iPhone Air.

According to Apple's official website, the only iPhone model currently eligible for eSIM in China is the mainland China version of the iPhone Air (model A3518) . In other words, if you own a Hong Kong or overseas version of the iPhone Air, even if the phone supports eSIM, you will not be able to apply for a number from a local Chinese telecom operator (such as China Unicom) and will most likely have to rely on roaming services.

However, if you choose to buy the mainland China version of the iPhone Air , you can not only apply for an eSIM in China, but also use the local eSIM when traveling to other countries or regions (you need to enable location services and confirm that you are not in China). For users who live in mainland China for a long time or frequently travel to the north, the mainland China version may be a more convenient choice, but the price will be slightly higher than the Hong Kong version, and users need to weigh the pros and cons themselves.
