How to receive overseas SMS without removing your original SIM card? Recommendations for cheap phone cards that receive SMS

With increasing demand for cross-border travel, overseas work, and bank verification, receiving international SMS (SMS/OTP) without removing the original SIM card has become a common issue. In reality, in most cases, as long as you use your original mobile operator's number and enable international roaming, you can generally receive SMS normally overseas, without needing to change your SIM card. This article also includes recommendations for super affordable phone cards, costing less than $4 a month, that allow unlimited SMS reception.

Modern smartphones (such as iPhone XS or later) support dual SIM (physical SIM + eSIM). However, it's important to understand a key concept:

  • SMS (short message/OTP) is transmitted via the mobile operator's network.
  • It does not rely on data or Wi-Fi.
  • As long as the phone successfully connects to a local partner mobile network, it can send and receive SMS.

Therefore, whether SMS can be received depends on whether your original mobile operator provides overseas roaming SMS service.

Most mobile operators support overseas SMS reception

According to international mobile roaming mechanisms:

  • Mainstream mobile operators (e.g., in Hong Kong: China Mobile Hong Kong, CSL, 3HK, SmarTone; major operators in Taiwan and Europe)
  • Generally support overseas roaming SMS sending and receiving.
  • Even if data roaming is not enabled, SMS can still be received in some cases (depending on settings and operator policies).

In other words, as long as users keep their original SIM card and maintain roaming status, most bank OTPs, login verification codes, and platform SMS can be received normally.

eSIM and Dual SIM Usage

The most stable configuration currently is as follows:

  • Original SIM (local mobile operator): Responsible for receiving SMS/OTP/bank verification codes
  • eSIM: Used for overseas data internet access

This arrangement effectively avoids affecting the verification process due to SIM card changes, while ensuring the original phone number remains functional.

The principle of receiving SMS overseas is actually quite simple: as long as you keep your original mobile operator SIM card and enable international roaming service, in most cases, you can still receive SMS normally. The main function of eSIM is to provide data connection and does not replace SMS reception capability.

Therefore, the most stable and common combination remains: original mobile operator SIM (for receiving SMS) + eSIM (for providing data internet access)

Important phone card restrictions and considerations

  • SMS must rely on the original number registered to the telecommunications network.
  • If roaming is turned off or not connected to the local network, SMS may not be delivered.
  • eSIM cannot "receive" SMS for the original SIM.
  • Some banks still require the original number to receive OTPs and do not accept alternative numbers.

Affordable eSIM recommendation for receiving SMS

In addition to directly using mobile operator roaming, some users choose number retention plans, such as:

  • Retain Hong Kong number
  • Long-term validity (e.g., 3-year plan)
  • Supports global SMS reception

For example, LuckySIM eSIM (number retention plan) offers integrated functionality for "number retention + overseas SMS reception," suitable for long-term travelers or students studying abroad.
